If you’re like me, you’re not a fan of writing about yourself.
What do you put? How much is too much? How much is not enough?
The struggle is real, but it doesn’t have to be.
1. Introduce your business name (or name) first.
“Clarissa…girl…duh!”
Or not so much. I’ve read profiles that read like the beginning of a teen angst movie:
“That’s Trish. We were best friends for 8 years until she became popular, and now she ignores me. And that’s Chad. Hot stuff football player who’s totally hot but doesn’t even know I exist. That’s Randy…”
I don’t care about everyone else. I care about you! And that’s how your clients feel as well. Get rid of the fluff, the talking about everything else that has nothing to do with what you have to offer (you’ll notice that theme throughout this post) and get down to it.
2. Get detailed on what you can offer them.
Background, clients you’ve worked with, what future clients can benefit from hiring you are three great things to focus on. You don’t have to make it formal or “business-y” (see number 3), but do include it.
3. Write in your own voice.
By Regina has a great profile. It’s informative and detailed about who she is and what she does, but it’s conversational at the same time. It’s HER and it comes across when I read her bio.
4. Remember: Your “About Me” is not a dating profile.
Your clients aren’t hiring you because you enjoy long walks on the beach or you enjoy painting in your spare time. Your readers don’t care that you can cook a gourmet meal in under hour for half the cost (unless, of course, that’s your niche). Fun info is fine, as it makes you a bit more “human” but if it doesn’t connect with what you have to offer, leave it out or put it towards the end as bullet points and/or simple sentences.
5. Include a photo that’s you.
I’m not a suit and tie person, so I’m not going to have a corporate photo in my about me profile. I’m all about business, but I’m all about yoga pants too. And no, I’m not anti-selfie, as long as it’s a good not-surveillance-camera-looking selfie. High-quality photos are the best. Check out XO Sarah’s photo.
