Hey you, yes you–we need to have a talk.
Lately, it seems to be that you are having a bit of doubt in yourself.
You see, the people you view as successful end up being your “goal” and you want to be like them.
I get it, I do. They’re doing it right, you’re doing it wrong, so change.
But I want to pump the brakes and tell you not to change yourself.
It’s time to be yourself.
There’s a lot of great advice out there, and yes, if it applies to you, use it! But, understand there’s a fine line between using the advice in your business/blog/branding model and straight-up copying.
Not just content or course/webinar ideas (I’ve talked about this here ). I’ve seen people copy website design and logo. Yeah sure, you’ve tweaked the background color from #FFFFF to #FFFF6, but it’s basically the same thing, and you know it.
“But I’m using Squarespace it’s hard to be different.” That doesn’t fly.
Here’s the thing, I can make this a rant and tell you to, “quit it!” or “snap out of it!” but once I do, you probably don’t know what to do next (I’m assuming. or you wouldn’t have done this in the first place).
So now that I’ve politely brought this to your attention, let’s start making changes:
Take a look at you and find characteristics about yourself.
Here are some questions to get you started:
1. What do you like about you?
2. How would others closest to you describe you (ask 3 people for honest answers)?
3. What is your number one goal in life?
4. What are your top three goals for your business/brand/blog?
5. What is/are your favorite color/colors?
6. How would you describe your clothing style?
7. How would you describe your interior style?
With each question, answer why. Keep that in a file and reference it when you’re feeling stuck.
And I know you’re going to ask me, “Why do I need to describe my interior style? Why do I need to know my clothing style?” Because we’re discovering who you are and those are components of you.
Next, create a mission and vision statement. Write them down.
These simple sentences will help you stay on track. It’ll help you remember your why.
Write a two-sentence summary of what you’re doing, then use that as your pitch.
In the end, you need to really find out who you are to avoid copying everyone else. You need to get confident in who you are so you can be comfortable in your business.
What does this lead to? More creative and authentic content. Finally writing in your own voice. Knowing your strengths so you can create teaching materials that differ from what’s out there and make you trustworthy.
That means more of you and less of a carbon copy.
That’s boring and whack. Stop that.
Until next time, C
